Leisure time

In the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains, you can spend your valuable free time in a variety of ways. From the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to the Ore Mountains: here you can hike, climb or explore the historic old towns of Pirna, Königstein or Dippoldiswalde, discover fairytale castles and parks or go deep into a mine.

Hiking enthusiasts will feel right at home here: in Saxon Switzerland alone, around 1,200 kilometers of marked hiking trails lead through a breathtaking landscape. One of the most popular hiking trails is the Malerweg. And: Saxony's only national park, the Saxon Switzerland National Park, is located in our district. You can even go climbing here. On the Elbe cycle path, you have a breathtaking view of the rocks.

The quality hiking trail Kammweg Erzgebirge-Vogtland leads 285 kilometers from Altenberg to Thuringia over the highest peaks of the Erzgebirge and Vogtland. The history of mining in Saxony is best experienced in the UNESCO World Heritage Ore Mountains/Krušnohoří Mining Region, which extends right into our district. And in the cold season, it's off to the Altenberg winter sports region.

Did you know?

Numerous castles and palaces bear witness to Saxony's former glory and splendor. Some of them are located in our district: from Königstein Fortress, the largest fortress in Europe, to Stolpen Castle, where Augustus the Strong married Countess Cosel for 49 years.
